It's Not 'Just IBS' Anymore
A new perspective on digestive health

digestive health and food intolerance

A turning point in digestive health: the NHS recognises food intolerance

For many years, digestive symptoms have often been grouped under one familiar label: ‘’IBS’’.

And while this diagnosis can be helpful in describing symptoms, many people are left feeling that it doesn’t quite provide the full picture.

  • Bloating.
  • Discomfort.
  • Changes in digestion.
  • Fatigue.

These are common experiences. Yet for many, the underlying cause remains unclear.

A shift in understanding

There has recently been an important development in how these symptoms are recognised. The NHS has now acknowledged food intolerance as a condition, and importantly, that assessment may include:

  • Structured dietary approaches
  • Symptom tracking
  • Professional nutritional support
  • And, where appropriate, laboratory testing

This reflects a broader move towards understanding the body in a more integrated and personalised way.

Why food intolerance can be difficult to identify

Unlike food allergies, which often produce immediate and obvious reactions, food intolerances tend to be more subtle.

Symptoms may:

  • Develop several hours after eating
  • Vary from day to day
  • Be influenced by lifestyle factors such as stress, sleep and overall diet

This can make patterns difficult to recognise without a more structured approach.

Moving beyond labels

Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis, there is increasing value in asking a different question: What is your body trying to communicate?

Digestive symptoms are often not random – they can reflect:

  • The way we process and respond to certain foods
  • The balance of the gut microbiome
  • Hormonal influences
  • The connection between the gut and the nervous system

Understanding these factors allows for a more targeted and supportive approach.

The Champneys approach to digestive wellbeing

At Champneys, we believe in looking beyond symptoms and supporting the body as a whole.

This includes:

  • Taking time to understand individual experiences
  • Using structured, evidence-informed approaches
  • Supporting guests with practical, realistic strategies
  • Encouraging balance rather than restriction

Where appropriate, more in-depth testing and personalised guidance can help bring further clarity.

Understanding Food Intolerance: A Structured Approach

For our guests and members, gaining further insight into potential food-related triggers can be a valuable step.

At Champneys, we offer a Premium Food Intolerance Test, designed to support a more structured and informed approach to identifying foods that may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.

The test involves a simple finger-prick blood sample, which is analysed in a UK-based, accredited laboratory. It measures IgG antibody responses to around 200 foods and drinks, helping to highlight potential intolerances.

Importantly, this test is not used to diagnose medical conditions. Instead, it forms part of a wider, guided process. In your inclusive results consultation we will support you with an appropriate and carefully structured elimination and reintroduction phase, alongside professional and tailored nutritional advice.

When interpreted correctly, this approach can help bring clarity to otherwise difficult-to-identify patterns, allowing for more personalised and sustainable dietary choices.

Digestive health is not about perfection.

It’s about awareness, understanding, and balance.

And as our understanding continues to evolve, so too does the opportunity to support the body in a more thoughtful and personalised way.
