10 Small Ways to Make More Time for Your Wellbeing

World Mental Health Day

When was the last time you gave yourself a little time to slow down?

With World Mental Health Day here, it's a reminder that looking after ourselves isn't just about our physical health. Our mental wellbeing deserves a little attention too.

And while there's no one-size-fits-all approach to feeling good, sometimes it's the smallest things that can make a difference. A little fresh air, a proper catch-up with someone you love, a moment away from your screen or simply giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing.

Here are 10 small ways to make a little more room for your wellbeing, not just today, but every day.

1. Get outside

Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need. Step away from your desk, leave your phone in your pocket and head outside for a walk, even if it's only for 20 minutes.

Spending time in nature can help lift your mood and give your mind a break from the busyness of everyday life. Whether it's a countryside stroll, a wander through your local park or simply sitting somewhere green for a while, a little fresh air can go a long way.

2. Find movement that feels good

Movement doesn't always have to be about hitting a fitness goal. Some days it might be a workout, while others could call for a morning swim, a gentle stretch or a yoga class.

The important thing is finding something you genuinely enjoy. It's something we embrace at Champneys, where everything from Pilates and aqua classes to peaceful countryside walks offers a different way to move, without it always having to feel like a workout.

3. Switch off properly

How often do you actually switch off without checking your phone, replying to a message or thinking about what's next?

Try giving yourself a little uninterrupted time. Put your phone away, turn off your notifications and allow yourself to simply be for a while.

Whether that's sitting somewhere quiet, taking a few deep breaths or enjoying a moment without anything else on your to-do list, creating a little distance from the constant noise can give your mind some much-needed breathing space.

4. Book some time just for you

It's very easy to put yourself at the bottom of the list, especially when life feels busy.

Instead, try treating time for yourself like any other appointment. Put it in the diary, make the plans and don't feel guilty about keeping them. It could be an evening to yourself, a favourite hobby or a couple of hours doing whatever makes you happiest.

And sometimes, a change of scenery can make all the difference. Whether it's an afternoon away from your usual routine or a little time to yourself in the spa, having something that's entirely yours can feel wonderfully restorative.

5. Spend time with people who make you happiest

A good catch-up can sometimes be just what you need. Make time for the people who lift your mood, whether that's a spontaneous coffee, a long lunch, a countryside walk or an evening spent laughing together.

You don't need a reason or a big plan. Spending time with people you feel comfortable around can help you feel more connected, supported and a little lighter.

And if you haven't spoken to someone in a while, why not send that message you've been meaning to send?

6. Give yourself a better night's sleep

Sometimes your body is ready for bed, but your mind hasn't quite caught up. If thoughts from the day are still whirring around, getting a good night's sleep can feel easier said than done.

Try creating a little distance between you and your to-do list before getting under the covers. Keep a regular bedtime where you can, put your phone away a little earlier and make your bedroom somewhere you genuinely look forward to retreating to.

A comforting bedtime ritual, whether that's reading a few pages of a book, listening to something relaxing or simply enjoying a little quiet, can help signal that it's time to wind down.

7. Check in with yourself

We're often so busy checking in with everyone else that we forget to ask ourselves how we're actually feeling.

Take a few minutes to notice what's on your mind. Maybe that means writing your thoughts down, talking something through with someone you trust or simply recognising when you need a little extra support.

You don't have to have everything figured out, and not every day needs to be a good one. Sometimes, acknowledging how you're feeling is a good place to start.

8. Make time for the little pleasures

Not every moment of joy needs to come from a big occasion. Sometimes it's the smallest things that make an ordinary day feel a little more special.

A favourite meal, your morning coffee enjoyed without rushing, fresh flowers on the table, a comforting bowl of something warm or finally finding time for that book you've been meaning to read.

Whatever your little pleasures look like, try making room for them. Rather than saving everything lovely for the weekend or a special occasion, find ways to enjoy the everyday moments too.

9. Give yourself permission to do less

There can be a lot of pressure to always be doing something, but rest has its place too.

Let yourself have an unplanned afternoon, spend an hour reading, listen to music or simply sit and let your mind wander. You don't need to turn every spare moment into something productive.

And if your plans for the evening involve absolutely nothing? That's perfectly fine too.

Taking your foot off the pedal every now and then can be a gentle reminder that rest isn't time wasted.

10. Have something to look forward to

Having something in the diary can bring a little brightness to the everyday. It doesn't have to be a big occasion. Sometimes, even the smallest plans can give you a lift during a busy week.

Maybe it's finally planning dinner somewhere you've been wanting to try, booking a weekend away, arranging a day out with someone you love or settling in with the latest series you've been meaning to watch.

Whatever feels exciting to you, give yourself something to look forward to and enjoy the anticipation along the way.

A little reminder, from us to you

Looking after your wellbeing doesn't have to mean doing everything differently. Some days you'll have the energy for a long walk, a workout or plans with friends. Other days, simply getting through the day might feel like enough.

And that's okay.

This World Mental Health Day, remember that making time for yourself isn't selfish, and there's no perfect way to do it. Find what makes you feel good, make room for the things that matter and be a little kinder to yourself along the way.
