Teaming up with a British baking favourite Nadiya Hussain, Champneys is pleased to announce the introduction of an innovative new afternoon tea menu - epitomising the brand’s ethos of combining its English heritage and dedication to wellness.
Despite originating in China, few things are known for being more characteristically British than tea, and indeed, few things are more indulgent than this country’s time-honoured tradition of afternoon tea.
At Champneys, we believe there’s so much more to the modern afternoon tea than just finger sandwiches and dainty cakes, though. With a nutritious twist, we’ve reinvented this classic pastime.
Converting convention towards the Champneys way and by applying our ‘Moderation, Balance and Variety’ philosophy, our new afternoon tea is both delicious and healthy. By using natural fruit sugars and plant-based sweeteners we’ve minimised the need for refined processed sugars.
Our tasty wholemeal scones are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals, and served with creamy fromage frais and pure fruit spread – maximising flavour, but lessening calories, fat and sugar.
We’ve also got delectable crab and avocado lettuce wraps served with fresh mango salsa, with sandwiches made from flax and chia bread - smoked salmon with lemon and dill crème fraiche and chicken and Champneys superslaw provide the fillings. They’re accompanied by baked smoked salmon scotch eggs.
Also on the menu, our chefs have crafted flavoursome summer dream mousse and homemade lemon curd, chocolate aubergine cake and superfood bliss balls.
As for the tea? We’ve been working closely with the sommeliers at Newby Teas in order to get the right blend of flavours. Cleanse your palettes with our beautiful lychee or blueberry flowering options.
Fresh from making the cake for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, British baking favourite Nadiya Hussain has also offered her expertise; adding the final touch with her dark chocolate dome showpiece.
Masterfully crafted and made of a light Genoese sponge with a layer of smooth vanilla mousse, fresh raspberries and raspberry mint jam. The showpiece, encompassed by a dome of dark chocolate, is a delight to the taste buds.
“I was so excited to be asked to create the showpiece dessert for the popular Champneys afternoon tea – which will be a healthier and more nutritious version of the British classic,” explained Nadiya. “Leading a healthy lifestyle is so important, and the new afternoon tea offers not only taste, but a nutritionally based treat.
“I chose a Genoese sponge because it is a lighter, less sugar alternative to a standard sponge. Raspberry and vanilla are a marriage made in heaven, complimenting one another as a result of the contrast of sweet vanilla and aromatic raspberry. The added component of dark chocolate adds a bitterness that can cut any richness."
“It’s been a really enjoyable experience. It’s been a challenge because it takes time, patience and a lot of measurement. When you have to enlist a ruler for your dessert you know it’s worth the wait.”
Combined with a healthy slice of spa pampering, afternoon teas can be enjoyed with views of the picturesque Champneys grounds or in the cosy setting of our terrace cafés and lounge areas.
Champneys afternoon tea is priced at £19.95 per person and is only available to guests as an add-on to their day/stay package. It is served between 2.30pm and 5pm Monday through to Sunday. Reservations can be made by calling 0843 3162222.
