"Chichester is a friendly and vibrant city where ancient history and Georgian elegance meets a twenty-first-century cosmopolitan buzz", shares Chichester Web. "There are plenty of things to do from visiting the city centre attractions, such as the Novium Museum, Pallant House Gallery and Chichester Cathedral to shopping for designer brands in high street retailers or independent artisan boutiques in the pedestrianised streets. During a busy day exploring, you’ll be sure to find the perfect place to dine in one of the many cafes and restaurants Chichester has to offer, or perhaps you may choose to take a picnic to the beautiful Bishop’s Palace Gardens or Priory Park, with it’s large open grass space and well-equipped children’s play area. Neatly enclosed by it’s ancient city walls, and packed with some fascinating historic architecture and buildings including The Market Cross, the Butter Market and Edes House, Chichester is truly unique and really does have it all."

Wander along the water at Chichester canal

“One of my favourite things to do in Chichester is to walk along the canal”, shares Kathryn from Sussex Bloggers. “The Canal Basin, where the walk starts, is very near the bus and train station so it's easy to get to. Follow the towpath and you'll soon be in the countryside, passing through the villages of Hunston and Donnington. The path ends at Chichester Marina. Walking back, you'll get some lovely views of Chichester with its cathedral spire rising up above the rooftops.”

Linking the city to the sea, the Chichester canal is four miles long and is home to a plethora of aquatic wildlife. During the summer months, the warmer weather makes long strolls along the canal the perfect afternoon activity, whilst in autumn you can enjoy watching the landscape change, with fiery shades of red, orange and yellow transforming the collection of trees. The canal boasts a range of different activities for you to try, including canoeing, fishing and cycling, as well as a quaint café where you can indulge with sumptuous ice cream or daydream as you sip on a coffee.

Be wowed at the Chichester festival theatre

Kathryn from Sussex Bloggers loves the range of things available in such a small city, telling us that: “Chichester's city centre is very compact making it easy to visit all its major attractions on foot. To see the city from a different perspective, walk along the old Roman wall, starting at the top of North Street. You can follow the wall around until you reach the Bishop's Palace Garden, a lovely place to wonder at any time of year”.

“It's always worth checking out what's on at the Festival Theatre and the smaller Minerva Theatre. I particularly enjoy the musicals, many of which go on to the West End.” Chichester Festival Theatre’s star-studded Festival 2019 season, running from April – October, includes musicals, world premieres, dramatic revivals and family shows. The events calendar is so varied that finding something to suit your taste will be easy, and the perfect excuse to stay for a weekend!

Treat yourself with a spot of shopping

People shopping

For those who love a spot of shopping, Chichester has a wide variety of shops on offer for you to visit, from high street favourites to independent boutiques. The majority of shops are situated in the city centre, with many parking places available close by.

Lucinda also recommends the shopping at Pallant House if you’re interested in art. “Pallant House is a world-class art gallery in the heart of the city. Housed in a magnificent Georgian townhouse and striking modern extension, its outstanding temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection of 20th and 21st-century art are constant sources of inspiration, discovery and enjoyment.”
