We are proud to welcome former Olympian, Professor Greg Whyte OBE as an ambassador for Champneys. Together we’ve developed a variety of boot camps to help guests on their journey to a healthier lifestyle in 2018.

Famed for coaching celebrities such as Zoe Ball, Jo Brand, Davina McCall and David Walliams through life changing challenges, Greg shares six easy tips that will help you achieve a healthier and more active lifestyle today.

1. BE REALISTIC

“The most difficult thing in life is to change behaviour. My advice? Take it one step at a time. Waking up and saying ‘right I’m going to lose 6 stone in a month’ leads to a cycle of failure that will see you stop trying. The average duration of a News Year’s resolution is 21 days. It’s the same with yo-yo dieting, only 10% of dieters lose weight in the long term and of the 90% that don’t, over half put on more weight than when they started.”

 

2. GET STARTED

“Being short of time is the most common excuse I get, but just 1 minute of exercise equals 6 minutes and 36 seconds of extra life. Standing up and sitting back down expends one calorie, and switches off enzyme that drives fat into your fat cells. You’ve only got to stand up and sit down once every 15 minutes to keep it continually switched off.”

 

3. SET GOALS 

“National health guidelines recommend 30 minutes of moderate activity every day. A quarter of UK adults do less than 30 minutes in a week. Brisk walking is a good place to start, just ten minutes a day reduces premature death by 15%. When out walking remember to do the talk test, if you can talk but you can’t sing then you’re in that moderate intensity region.”

 

4. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

“Stepping is brilliant, I give all my clients a Fitbit. Any activity no matter how small is better than sitting still. Don’t worry about 10 thousand steps because if you’re not moving at all, ten thousand steps feels like it’s unachievable. Just do more today than you did yesterday and if you keep doing that day by day you will hit those health guidelines.”

 

5. SELF-MOTIVATE

“Think of that one reason why you are striving to be healthier, write it down and pop it on the fridge. It will remind you, on the days that you can’t be bothered. For everybody it will be different, but it will drive you when it gets tough. And it will get tough, because living healthily is not easy, until it becomes part of life and just what you do.”

 

6. STAY FOCUSED

“When it comes to starting a healthier lifestyle, focus on the outcome and not the process. If you make changes, you will be rewarded and it will be worth it in the end. If you think about the end goal, you will eventually reach it.”
