Champneys’ celebrity friends through the decades

As the country’s original health spa, we know we’re doing something right. We love helping our guests to destress, revitalise and improve their overall wellbeing, and sometimes, that includes celebrities. We’ve been fortunate enough to welcome royalty, sporting legends and Hollywood actors. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of Champneys’ celebrity friends through the decades.

History of Champneys – The original health spa

Champneys Tring

When Stanley Lief set up the country’s first health farm in the 1920s, no one could predict how successful it would be. Visited by the likes of the late Princess Diana, Daniel Craig and David and Victoria Beckham, celebrities of all walks of life have visited our five locations: Forest Mere, Tring, Henlow, Springs and Eastwell Manor.

The estate in which Champneys Tring is now housed dates back to the early 1300s, when it was owned by Ralph de Champneys as part of the Manor of Tring. The spectacular building as it stands now was built by the Reverend Arthur Sutton Valpy in 1874, before being sold on to Lady Rothschild in the early 1900s.

In the meantime Stanley Lief, an eccentric naturopath, had been diagnosed with an incurable heart condition, and was using naturopath (a blend of exercise, diet and massage) to nurse himself back to health. Having been president of the British Naturopathic and Osteopathic Association three times during his life, as well as the dean of the British College of Naturopathy, Lief was well-respected in his field.

The estate, now Champneys Tring, was transformed by Lief in 1925 as a health farm known as the Nature Cure Resort. The first of its kind in the UK, the health hub was revolutionary, pioneering the concept of holistic health. Today, we continue to practice the founding principles established by Lief to help celebrities from all over the world to relax and focus on their wellbeing.

Champneys’ celebrity guests

Among our most famous celebrity guests are Naomi Campbell, Brad Pitt, Kylie Minogue, Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, David and Victoria Beckham and even the cast of Made in Chelsea. In recent years, our bespoke pregnancy spa treatments have attracted expecting celebrities and their loved ones looking for a relaxing break. Most recently, TV personality Jessica Cunningham visited Champneys for her baby shower.

Here at Champneys, we’re always delighted to welcome celebrities to our spa resorts. Our huge range of treatments, from massages to chocolate wraps, mean that you can have the break you truly deserve. Our spas also offer the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and loved ones, as former Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh recently did with her sisters.

Celebrities of all walks of life have flocked to Champneys to experience the country’s original health spa, including the late Princess Diana. She stayed in our Princess Suite, and within the grounds of our Champneys Tring estate, you’ll find a remembrance plaque in honour of Princess Diana.

As well as rest and relaxation, our spas also offer rehabilitation and wellness treatments. British boxing legend Frank Bruno, who has been open about his bipolar disorder, firmly believes in training and exercising in order to encourage good mental health. A valued club member, Frank is frequently spotted enjoying some well-deserved Champneys time at our resorts.

At the launch of a 24-hour charity boxathon to raise money for victims of mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, Frank told The Mirror: “I strongly believe exercise, diet and lifestyle are the key to ensuring these horrible mental illnesses can be overcome. All too often we are filling people with pills. Events like this show there can be – and is – another way.”

Here at Champneys, we offer fitness and boot camps, yoga and Pilates classes, as well as mindfulness and meditation classes to help your mental and physical wellbeing. Our weight loss and detox retreats are also recommended for those wishing to change old habits and start seeing results.

For some celebrities, it’s all about delicious food and relaxation. And who can blame them? TV and radio presenter Melanie Sykes recently visited us at Champneys Tring for a tranquil spa day and yoga class for the ultimate girls’ day out. For others, it’s about taking time away from taxing work schedules, such as appearing on Dancing On Ice. Stars of the show, Alex Beresford and Jake Quickenden joined fellow contestant and Love Island winner, Kem Cetinay at Champneys Tring for some much needed R and R ahead of the live shows throughout the 2017 series.

We love seeing people (famous or not!) enjoying their time with us. Whether you’re a celebrity, or just want to be treated like one, you’re welcome to visit us at Champneys.
