Halloween is a great time of year, but you don’t need your GP to tell you that all the chocolate, sweets and other high sugar treats on offer aren’t healthy.
If you want to stop your child or yourself from overloading on sweets this Halloween, consider handing out healthy snacks to celebrate the holiday without adding to the sugar rush.

What makes these Halloween snacks even better is that you can make them within 30 minutes or less and they will stay fresh for several hours.
•Dried wild blueberries
The dead man’s finger food is another really easy treat to make for Halloween as all you need to do is gently flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin and spread the light butter before rolling up the sandwiches and making three indentations with a blunt knife to portray the finger joints.
Annabel Karmel from the Parenting.com website says, “Trim the ends of the fingers into a 'V' shape and stick an almond on to each tip to form the nails.
“Now for the gruesome bit - add a dollop of strawberry jam over the end of the finger for the blood!”
Before sharing the snack it’s best to check that children and adults don’t suffer from a nut allergy.
This is another ghoulish goody you can easily whip up for Halloween that is also a lot healthier than the normal sweets you would eat.
According to the BBC Good Food Guide you will need to core the apples whilst keeping the stalk ends intact and then brush the cut parts of the apples with lemon juice. Then you just need to melt the chocolate and once melted stir in the puffed rice and place the mixture into the apples. Make sure there are some crawling out to add an extra spooky effect. The apples then go in the fridge for 20 minutes to set.
You can then spoon any remaining mixture into a mini muffin tin with paper petit four cases and put in the fridge. After this process and once the chocolate is set you can peel the paper cases away and put the maggot balls around the apples and some jelly worms to make it frighteningly more delicious.

Jennifer Iserloh, a healthy cooking expert and health coach, runs the Skinny Chef Blog and she highly recommends her mini Halloween cupcakes.
She says, “Now that I’m not a kid anymore, I don’t crave a pillow case or huge stack of candy - but these mini cupcakes are ideal for a smaller sweet treat that only clocks in at 46 calories.”
These spooktacular healthy mini cupcakes don’t take long to make and are perfect as Halloween desserts if you are hosting a party.
You can of course mix it up and make a variety of different cupcakes that feature different Halloween themes; from witches’ brew cupcakes to ones that feature pumpkins.
•510 grams all-purpose flour
•1/2 teaspoon baking powder
•1/2 teaspoon baking soda
•1/4 teaspoon salt
•57 grams unsalted butter
•100 grams sugar
•1 egg white
•1/2 cup 1% buttermilk or plain low-fat yoghurt
•1/2 cup 100% pink grapefruit juice or orange juice
•1 tablespoon pink grapefruit zest
•1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
•8 ounces cream cheese
•57 grams unsalted butter
•50 grams powdered sugar
•1 teaspoon vanilla extract
We know that the jelly snakes you can buy from the shops are tasty, but they are also unhealthy with a high sugar content and that’s why we recommend making these healthy monster apple bite Halloween snacks instead.
The process is quite straightforward and they will only take you around 10 minutes to prepare. These Halloween snacks serve 12 people and are really healthy option as they only contain a small number of calories.
You can always add other fruits to make the snack even more realistic such as a strawberry for a tongue or use other ingredients like marshmallows and dried blueberries for eyes.
•Granny smith apples
•1 1/2 Oz mini M&M’s
•510 grams peanut butter
•21 grams silvered almonds
Whilst white chocolate is needed, this is a far healthier option than any Halloween treats you would normally find in the shops.
Plus, his healthy alternative is so easy to make. Simply melt the white chocolate, cut the bananas in half and dip one end into the chocolate.
Then pop them into the fridge until the chocolate hardens and then share out your delicious homemade Halloween desserts with the whole family.
