Altitude training is a great complement to any training programme and is a powerful boost to your cardiovascular fitness. Exercising at altitude has long been used by elite sports people as part of their training programme, enabling them to increase their cardiovascular fitness through an increase in red blood cells and improved oxygen efficiency. Following an initial 5 minute acclimatisation process where your body breathes hypoxic air, reducing the amount of oxygen in your blood (saturation), you then exercise for 20-minutes at altitude. Using the professional Watt bike, we monitor your oxygen saturation levels, your heart rate and your corresponding power output during the session to ensure you exercise at an optimal training intensity. The Watt bike also enables us to record each workout and monitor your progress over the weeks.

Altitude Training for Injury Rehabilitation
The impact of not being able to exercise during injury will always prolong the rehabilitation process. This 25-minute bike programme involves reducing the amount of oxygen available for you to breathe during exercise by wearing a mask that provides a simulated altitude effect. This increases the intensity of the training sessions without increasing the physical load on your body. The end result is that you can achieve a far greater training response for the same training programme when compared to exercising under ‘normal’ conditions. Altitude training will also enable you to burn more calories during your workout to help maintain body composition during a period of enforced inactivity during injury.

Altitude Training for Mountaineering
If you are looking to embark on a mountaineering expedition, you can begin your acclimatisation process with Champneys Medical by experiencing the effects of breathing hypoxic air. Acclimatisation is very individual specific and is generally not a reflection of a person’s level of fitness. Therefore this treatment is essential for anyone planning on spending time at altitude to avoid the harmful and dangerous effects of altitude sickness.
During the treatment you simply sit comfortably whilst wearing an oxygen mask simulating the effects of breathing at altitude. Dependent upon your oxygen saturation levels, the altitude can be adjusted during the treatment to ensure optimal results.
